Don't Look Up 2021
I showed my anti-vax parents this movie and they fell to their knees, thanking Jesus Christ and Adam McKay for showing them the error of their ways. They pledged to reduce their carbon emissions by 80% by 2024 and deleted their Facebook accounts on the spot.
They agreed that our society is too distracted by celebrities and controlled by big tech, so they decided to listen to this star-studded movie on Netflix and joined the DSA, stopped using Amazon, and are dedicating the rest of their lives to fighting climate change. Thank you Adam, you are smart and righteous and a very good man!! Two stars!!

Licorice Pizza 2021
A warm tribute to a kind of relationship I feel like lots of us have stuffed way in the back of a mental drawer: the ill-advised crush turned briefly, oddly, achingly mutual, transmuted not into a romantic relationship but into an ambiguous, charged entanglement.
Alana's reluctant seduction by Gary in the first few scenes strikes me as incredibly psychologically realistic. She outlines a boundary upfront and continues verbally repeating it, but by her actions edges toward it out of curiosity.…

The 15 Best Netflix Original Movies of 2021
Let us be honest here- Netflix's 2021 was like any other year. Other than a few overrated, chart-bursting favorites, there was only mediocre content spilled all over. From yakuza actioner Kate to the romantic comedy He's All That, there was no dearth of cringe-fests either. While it might mean a greater number of web shows on the platform, that just means a new low for feature-length cinema.
Women Pioneers of Cinema
After bringing Alice Guy to light in 2020, LaCinetek is once again partnering with Lobster Films to present, within its "Hidden Treasures" section, a selection of 7 new films from the beginning of the 20th century made by women, little celebrated yet innovative. Lois Weber, Mabel Normand, Germaine Dulac or Mary Ellen Bute: so many pioneers women filmmakers whose rich filmography, almost unseen on VOD, should be (re)discovered.

Italian Film Week at the VIFF Centre 🇮🇹
Our Italian Film Week features 14 films, seven new releases, seven classics from masters like Fellini, Visconti, De Sica and Monicelli, showing here in restored 4K digital prints. There's a spotlight on actor Toni Servillo, who stars in four of this year's selection, including the poignant prison drama The Inner Cage and a biopic about the legendary comic actor Eduardo Scarpetta, The King of Laughter, as well as his landmark performance in The Great Beauty. Our opening film and the…
